Girls Day Out

John wanted to spend the opening day of The Open Championship on the course with the celebrities. We got up early and drove him to Troon, to the Royal Troon Golf Club, site of the 145th Open Championship. We knew he would be all day, so we girls took the opportunity to spend the day doing fun "girl" things. We thought you might like to spend the day with us!

Troon was a zoo--crowds, traffic diversions, security and police all over--so we drove about 15 minutes down the west coast to a town called Ayr. Ayr is a fairy good-sized coastal town compared to all the other little villages that dot the countryside.

We started out with breakfast at a little bar/coffee shop called The Meridian. Lovely little place. Kat had the very traditional English scone with jam and cream. English scones are like very large biscuits. Good ones are very high, light, and fluffy. The traditional way to eat them is with jam and "clotted cream" and they are delicious. Ellie had the traditional "Ellie breakfast"--a waffle with Nutella and bacon, and hot chocolate with cream and marshmallows!

Ayr is large enough to have an Odeon Cinema complex--and in Scotland we can see English-speaking movies! Yay! We took advantage and went to 2 movies--Ice Age-Collision Course and The Secret Life of Pets. The only disappointment was that they do not put butter on their popcorn, nor do they have any mechanism for doing so. So we skipped the popcorn but enjoyed the movies.

After the movies we shopped a little bit. We found a candy store and walked in. The proprietor kept giving us samples of different fudges, so we felt obliged to buy something. We bought John some rum-raisin fudge and Ellie bought a package of candy paper money. Weird! Kat had been looking for a new cover for her iPhone 5 for quite some time. She just happened to find a great one in one of the shops. She loves it. We then ate lunch at Burger King (in need of an American meal). Ellie and I were both in need of a haircut so we walked around town and found a salon, the Bella Mari, that could fit us in. Ellie twisted and twisted my arm and I was going to let her get a black streak dyed in her hair. They would not proceed because of her age, that she had not had hair dyed before, and the possible allergic consequences if she had a reaction to the dye. So I got a haircut and she ended up getting her "fringe" (bangs) trimmed and a patch test placed behind her ear for the possible eventuality of getting a streak dyed in the future! (So far she has had no reaction to the dye so I expect my arm will be twisted even more in the near future.)

John was still having fun at The Open, so we drove to the seashore and walked around for a while. Found some shells and sea glass. We were visited by a swan and a goose that were swimming with a bunch of baby swans. We thought the swan and the goose were an odd couple, but they did seem to be a couple!

That was our girls' day in Ayr. We met John back in Troon, had a lovely light dinner in a shop there, and drove home happy! Thanks for sharing it with us.
