Loch Ness and Urquhart Castle

We decided to go on a little side trip to see if we could see Nessie. The mountains outside of Ft. William are stunningly beautiful. Pictures don't even come close to capturing the beauty and majesty of these mountains. If green is a healing color, then everyone in Scotland should be feeling very well.

From there, we drove up to Loch Ness, which is a very long lake. We visited Urquhart Castle which has a wonderful history dating back to the time of the Picts and probably earlier. They have been able to date things here back to 300-500 AD, but it was probably inhabited before that. The tour and visit were well worth the time and money. Scotland has a really interesting history, mostly of violence and bloodshed, and this castle played a prominent role in the history of the surrounding countryside.

They have reconstructed a seige engine complete with the rounded stone ammunition. These things could hurl a 75 lb. stone 200 meters.

After the castle, we drove back to Ft. Agustus and watched a boat go up the locks from Loch Ness to Loch Oich. Then we drove back to Ft. William where we will spend the night in a hostel.
