Products--just for fun!

I thought, for fun, I would show you a few of the local products we buy. Some are different, some are the same as what we get in the US. Just for fun!

1. Tuna comes in very small cans and I have not found any that is NOT packed in oil. Some come with these "peel off" lids that don't allow the oil to be pressed out. With these cans, I have to put the tuna into a strainer and rinse it. But, when mixed with mayonnaise, it tastes just as good.

2. Cookie assortments--some are crappy, but these were really good. We'll probably buy them again.

3. Plastic wrap comes in boxes just like at home, but without any way to tear off sections--no metal or cardboard grid on the box. I have to pull out as much as I want, then cut it off with scissors or a knife. Awkward!

4. Nesquik strawberry powder for milk--just like home!

5. Grocery stores have freezer cases for desserts, but they do not sell half-gallon cartons of plain ice cream. Only ice cream bars and the like.

6. Plain old chicken noodle soup. They do not sell soup in cans. They sell very few items in metal containers. Most are in cardboard cartons or paper packaging like this.

7. Equivalent of Ho-Ho's.

8. Vitamin C--we could not find this in tablets but the pharmacist gave us this tube of tablets that dissolve in water like Alka-Seltzer. It's not too bad, but the girls don't like it. I found some Vitamin C tablets at another pharmacy.

9. Garlic powder. Thank goodness for pictures!

10. Peanut butter. This is hard to find. We could not find any in France. We happened upon some accidentally in Barcelona and learned what to look for. They do not keep it with jams and other bread spreads. You have to search. But we have now found two brands and so the girls are happy with their toast!

11. Tomato soup. Actually, we are still not totally sure this is not tomato sauce, but when mixed with water it tastes just like American tomato soup, so that's what we use it for! It comes in cardboard cartons.

12 & 13. Pancakes and syrup. Pancakes are one of Kat's favorites. We finally found a mix for "tortitas Americanas" and a small bottle of "Vertmont" maple syrup in the big English store called El Corte Ingles. This is a large department store with a grocery section as big as a city block. It carries a lot of products that neighborhood groceries do not have. The pancakes and the syrup were very good.

14. Spanish version of Dramamine. Kat needed some for the train trips. She got very sick when we went to Madrid, so we bought this from a pharmacist. I took Jeri's advice and gave her only 1/2 pill, and it worked great.

15. Spanish version of Chips Ahoy!

16. Milka chocolate products. Milka is the best. The girls will eat anything "Milka." Their chocolate is very good and they make a variety of products.

17. This a a product I found in the English store that I have not seen in the US. Have you seen Mug Cakes? They are small mixes that are mixed in a coffee mug and baked in the microwave. They are very good.

18. Pringles, yes, just like home!

19. This is something we found here that we love. Pomegranate jam. It's really good.

20. Fanta Orange and Coke Light (same as Diet Coke) are sold here and are available in all the restaurants we've been to. The restaurants bring it either in a cold can or bottle, or sometimes they give you a glass with one ice cube.

Thought this was fun to do. I hope you liked seeing some of the local products.
