Gaudi

Barcelona is home to many of the works of Antoni Gaudi. Antoni Gaudí i Cornet was a Spanish Catalan architect from Reus/Riudoms and the best known practitioner of Catalan Modernism. It appears that he didn't like square corners! Here we visit a park that was created by him. It sits on a hill overlooking the city, and offers some marvelous views.

The public area of the park is free, and you can spend hours here wandering along the winding paths. Today was a nice day, and there were crowds of people, but they are interesting too, as they come from all over the world. Here is a gallery of pictures that show the elevated walkways, the elevated planters, the rounded stone benches and retaining walls that the park is famous for.

Here are some images of the park in from the pay area..which we did not visit, and these are taken off the internet. Can't see paying $8 euros each, but these are impressive.

Here are a couple of shots of apartment houses that we designed by Gaudi:

And of course, his most monumental work, which is still in progress is the Sagrada Familia church.

Construction began on this church in March 1882. Many local tradesmen will donate a year to service on the construction right after they retire. I couldn't get a decent picture from a distance, so I borrowed one from the internet, but the others are mine. I have noticed that everything seems to have a price attached. If you want to tour the inside of the church, you have to pay $12 euros each. We were warned off, and told that the inside is very much under construction too, and that it wasn't worth the money. But there were crowds of people lining up to buy tickets to take the tour!

And now you know where we got the word gaudy in our lexicon! I can't imagine our church charging people to see the inside of a temple. We invite all to come before the temple is dedicated, at which point it becomes something sacred to us.
